The following describes the categories in the BCNU Budget.
Negotiations—Bargaining for New Collective Agreements
- bargaining committees, elected by convention
- regional and provincial bargaining conferences for all collective agreements
- public campaigns around negotiations including radio, TV and newspaper ads, bargaining bulletins, public opinion polls
Strengthening the Membership, Servicing and Organizing
- legal expenses. Of the more than $5 million spent in contract servicing, almost 1.2 million goes to legal expenses for arbitrations.
- organizing expenses, including legal costs. BCNU has organized more than 1000 new members into the union over the past five years.

Education: Union-Building Courses for Stewards and Members
- steward, contract interpretation, OH&S, leadership, assertiveness, bargaining and job action education and many other topical courses for members

- salary replacement and expenses for members attending provincial courses
Occupational Health and Safety
- WCB claims — medical legal letters, legal fees
- Long Term Disability claims
- development of OH&S education programs
- OH&S communications to members such as bulletins brochures on specific topics, steward OH&S manual
- BCNU pension plans
- staff salaries
Communications and Campaigns
- BCNU regular publications: Update, Advocate, Annual Report, brochuresmedia services (wire services)
- campaign support and funding to book off stewards to organize worksite campaigns
- staff costs
Legislative Activities
- campaigns: provincial and worksite. BCNU funds many local worksite campaigns on specific worksite issues such as workload
- relations with CRNBC
- membership in Canadian Federation of Nurses' Unions and the Canadian Labour Congress and the BC Federation of Labour
Council, Committees and Convention
- convention, attended by approximately 250 delegates
- meetings of council, executive committee and associated salary reimbursement
- president’s salary, regional treasurer training
- committees of council such as OH & S, Finance, Resolutions, Nominations, Pensions, Provincial Job Action Committee
- conducting elections. This varies from year to year.
Regions
- salary reimbursement and member expenses for attending regional meetings and education. Salaries are reimbursed for all provincially funded activities
- support to regional executives
- three education workshops held in each region annually, attended by more than 600 members
- OH&S regional workshops
