Thanks to the hard work of nurses and other health care workers, WorkSafeBC (WCB) has agreed to strengthen proposed new rules to prevent injuries from needles and other sharp devices. The new rule will require employers to use the safest device, not the cheapest. WorkSafeBC has also agreed to send additional changes to a new public hearing. These changes would extend the new rules to all medical procedures. Tell your MLA you support the strongest possible regulation to protect all health care workers from needless injuries.

Fact Sheet on WCB Regulation

"Summary of Concerns... " provides background information which lists our concerns with the regulation as originally proposed by WorkSafeBC.

Tell the Premier and/or your MLA that we need a sharps regulation that is comprehensive, makes use of the safest products and is mandatory across BC.

Key points:

  • The regulation will not be in effect until Jan 2008, which is too long to wait.
  • Only covers vascular access devices, which leaves out the majority of sharps not covered.
  • There is no worker input in choosing the devices.
