Advanced Grievance Handling

This three day workshop is designed to strengthen stewards' abilities to resolve workplace/member problems, focusing on investigation, member mobilization, meeting preparation, and step 2 grievance presentation. It is aimed at stewards who have "middle level" skills: those who are active grievance handlers at step 2 level.

Workshop topics include:

  • grievance investigation, research, documentation and note-taking
  • guidelines for preparation of different types of grievances
  • effective use of the collective agreement and contract interpretation manual in preparing grievances
  • presentation skills at step 2
  • mobilizing members to win grievances
  • Prerequisite: Basic Steward Workshop.
    Recommendation of the Steward team
    Steward must have handled at least five step 2 grievances in the past 3 years
    Length: Three days
    When: Held once a year at the BCNU provincial office in Burnaby
    Remuneration: Salary replacement and travel expenses for the three days.
