Protect casual call in by seniority
Nurses calling in sick because of the flu or other illness likely to keep them off work for more than one shift, should not call in on a day-by-day basis.
Nurses expecting to miss more than one shift because of illness should give notice for the entire period they expect to be away.
That's because of the contract clause in the new Provincial Collective Agreement that gives employers the right to call in casuals out of seniority order for the first shift of a vacancy if they receive 24 hours or less notice of the vacancy creating the relief work.
If you call in sick each day you are off, the employer could call in out of seniority each of those days.
Therefore, to ensure fewer casual shifts are assigned out of seniority order, it would be preferable if possible, for nurses to give notice of the entire period they expect to be away. This would require the employer to respect seniority for all shifts except the first shift of the vacancy.
