Waiver forms will assist us during the next round of bargaining
Management at Providence Health Care is deliberately attempting to sabotage BCNU's efforts to collect waiver forms from nurses.
Providence's flagrant attempt to block BCNU from gathering this data became obvious in a memo sent to all RNs and RPNs on May 7. It informed you that signing the waiver is optional and that you may return the waivers unsigned to Human Resources/Payroll.
BCNU wants you to sign the waiver form for the release of your social insurance number so we can begin gathering accurate information on a number of workload issues, such as the number of overtime hours worked by BCNU members. We can use that information during the next round of bargaining to improve working conditions for all nurses.
What management failed to mention in the memo is why BCNU needs you to sign the waiver.
The waiver will allow BCNU to collect accurate data on:
- the number of nurses working casual and how many hours they work
- the number of part-time nurses and exactly how many hours they work
- how many people work in each classification level
- hours worked at each worksite

The need for the data became obvious during the last round of bargaining, when our employer steadfastly refused to admit that nurses across BC were experiencing horrendous workload problems. That led BCNU's bargaining team to negotiate a clause in our new contract that requires employers to supply us with computerized data on workload issues - providing union members sign the waiver forms.
Rest assured that BCNU will continue to protect your privacy.
You should know that BCNU already has your Social Insurance Number. But your SIN is not attached to the above information. The waiver we are asking you to sign will allow your employer to release that accurate data to us. We also want you to know that group info, not individual info, will be gathered. Your privacy will continue to be protected.
When you sign the waiver form you'll automatically be entered into a draw for two airplane tickets anywhere in North America (excluding Hawaii).
The draw takes place on June 15, 1999. Thanks for your help.
