Projectionists need our support to end lock out

BC projectionists are asking nurses and other members of the public to respect their picket lines by refusing to see movies at theatres involved in their long simmering labour dispute.

Sixty projectionists in BC (members of IATSE local 348) have been locked out by Famous Players and Cineplex Odeon since December 1998. Famous Players and Cineplex (North America's two largest and most profitable movie chains) are demanding the projectionists accept a 60 per cent wage cut.

The projectionists have refused to cave in to their employers unacceptable demands. But in order to win their fight, the projectionists need public support. That's why they're asking all members of the public, but union members in particular, to honour their picket lines--just as members of other unions refused to cross BCNU picket lines during last year's job action.

You can help the projectionists by refusing to see a movie at a theatre involved in the dispute. Fortunately for movie fans there are many theatres unaffected by the lock out.

For instance, in the Lower Mainland you can catch Notting Hill and four other new releases at Vancouver's Fifth Avenue Cinemas or you can see the new Star Wars at several suburban theatres, including Cottonwood 4 Cinemas in Chilliwack, Caprice 4 Showcase in White Rock and Harris Road 3 Cinemas in Pitt Meadows.

Other BC communities affected by the lock out also have alternative movie theatres. For instance, in Kamloops you can support the projectionists by seeing numerous movies which are playing at several theatres that are not behind picket lines.

You'll find a complete list of acceptable theatres, movies and show times, on the projectionists web site: www.bcprojectionists.com/showtime.html.
