BCNU may support Visa applications

Any foreign nurse currently working in BC who wants to renew her visa needs to complete an application form for the foreign worker visa program. The form has to be submitted by the employer to Human Resources Development Canada. The Employer will then contact the BCNU Labour Relations Officer to seek the union’s approval.

Under current federal regulations, any foreign nurse now working in BC with a soon-to-expire visa must receive permission from BCNU before her visa will be renewed by the federal government. Other unions, such as those in the film industry, are also frequently asked for input before the federal government will authorize a new visa for a foreign worker.

The question of visa applications for foreign nurses was examined by BCNU Council in May. Due to the growing nursing shortage, Council agreed to support visa applications for foreign nurses if the employer can prove it has:
  • posted the position internally and offered training for any nurse who needs it to qualify for the job

  • registered the vacancy with the HLAA

  • advertised the job in BC and offered training for any nurse who needs it to qualify for the job

  • advertised the job across Canada and offered training for any nurse who need it to qualify for the job

  • contacted BCNU at least six weeks prior to the visa deadline, so BCNU can contact the employer and verify they have complied with our requirements.
