Campaign to redue non-nursing duties: radio ads being November 1

BCNU will begin running radio ads the week of November 1 as part of our campaign to reduce non-nursing duties for RNs.

Campaign Objectives: The objective of the campaign is to reduce nurses' workload and improve our ability to provide better care to patients/clients/residents, despite the serious shortage of nurses. The campaign is also designed to provide positive solutions to the nursing shortage, and to reinforce the value of RN work in the public mind as we prepare for the next round of bargaining.

We want to convince managers, health authorities and the provincial government that many of the duties normally done by RNs keep us away from providing nursing care. We want more service employees hired to take on non-nursing tasks. Such a campaign, which began during job action last year, has already lead to the hiring of service workers to deliver meal trays (formerly an RN responsibility) at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

Dates: Because the worksite campaigns to reduce non-nursing duties will begin in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley regions, the ads will be running initially in those areas only. We will inform you when the ads will begin running in the rest of the province. The ads will run throughout the day Monday to Friday the week of Nov. 1 and the week of Nov. 15.

Stations: CFUN-AM, CKBD-AM, CKWX-AM, CKNW-AM, CISL-AM, CKGO-AM, CHWK-AM, CKMA-AM, CHQM-FM, CJJR-FM, CKKS-FM.
