Langley hospital nurses to reveal results of campaign to reduce non-nursing duties

Nurses at Langley Memorial Hospital have fired the first shot in a province-wide campaign to reduce the burden of non-nursing duties.

These duties are compounding the current nursing shortage, by taking RNs away from providing the nursing care needed by patients in hospitals, residents in long term care homes and clients in the community.

At Langley Memorial, nurses on four units were asked to drop a penny in a jar every time they were required to perform a non-nursing duty during one shift this past weekend. They also calculated how much time they spent on various non-nursing duties - such as clerical activities, portering patients, and delivering meal trays.

Nurses will provide preliminary results of their campaign at noon,Tuesday Nov. 9 in Conference Room 5 in the basement of Langley Memorial Hospital near the cafeteria. (22051 Fraser Highway).
