Liberal cuts will hurt many nurses who go off on WCB
New rules effective June 30 mean serious rollbacks for BCNU members who are considered permanently disabled
Vocational rehabilitation benefits cut
A full time DC1 nurse at Step 9 who receives WCB vocational rehabilitation benefits will get about $700 a month less.
Permanent disability pension eliminated
A nurse injured at age 51 with a permanent disability will get a lump sum payment at age 65 of only $37,000. Currently, if she had lived ten years beyond age 65 her pension would have been worth $450,000.
CPP Disability benefits trigger 50 per cent cut
A nurse injured after June 30 receiving the maximum CPP disability benefit and a WCB pension will receive $475 per month less.
Inflation protection cut
WCB benefits will no longer be fully protected for inflation. Inflation protection will be one per cent less than the actual inflation rate up to a maximum of four per cent. It will be calculated once a year instead of twice.
"Non-traumatic" stress claims outlawed
The only claim allowed will be for actual workplace assaults. Stress arising from poisonous working environments won’t be recognized, and appeals won’t be allowed
