Severance pay - When are nurses eligible?

Eligibility for severance occurs only when the employment relationship is completely terminated. That is, there needs to be a break in service of at least 30 calendar days.

Regular (full time and part-time) employees with a minimum of ten years of service are entitled to severance allowance where the employee’s service is no longer required by the Employer due to worksite closure or deletion of positions resulting in layoff (see: Article 19.01 (B) (5) Severance Allowance and Article 55.01 (B) Eligibility for Severance Allowance).

An eligible employee is entitled to one (1) week of pay for every two (2) years of service to a maximum of 20 weeks of pay. This limit is not affected by the provisions of Bill 29 (Article 55.02).

The pay rate is the rate of pay on the employee’s last day worked in their position.
