BCNU asks St. Mary’s Hospital for guarantees
Hospital staff needs detailed information about how management plans to keep St. Mary’s Hospital open, in order to avoid rumours and misunderstandings about the future.
With this in mind, BCNU has written hospital CEO Hal Schmidt asking for the details of the partnership arrangement he is contemplating with an Alberta firm, and how he plans to keep the hospital running as a public facility.
The union is also asking for written confirmation that employees’ jobs will be protected, that the hospital can assure successorship rights are afforded to the unions representing St. Mary’s employees, and that employees will retain their collective agreement rights including protection of their pensions, severance provisions, benefits, seniority and wages.
BCNU wants an open public process to safeguard patients’ rights and maintain current services provided by St. Mary’s within the community.
BCNU is calling on the hospital to insist on public meetings for the panel being established to review the Fraser Health Authority’s decision to cancel its affiliation agreement with St. Mary’s.
Only through public meetings and full disclosure can all parties ease the fears and anxieties created by the Health Authority decision to cancel the affiliation agreement.
