An "Urgent Action" request to Lower Mainland area BCNU Stewards
Can you spare two hours to try and stop B.C’s biggest mass firing of women workers in Canada?
Did you know that of the 5,000 HEU members that are slated for pink slips in the next few weeks two thirds of them are supporting dependent children and /or adults?
Did you know that a recent poll shows that over 70% of British Columbians believe that the government plans to lay off these 5000 health care workers and privatize their work will have a negative impact on patient care?
It’s time for Victoria and its health authorities to talk to health care unions about the alternatives to contracting out support services. Health unions have said clearly that they are prepared to negotiate solutions that will protect and improve health care delivery. Four out of five British Columbians also said in a recent poll that they want workers, government and employers to sit down to find alternatives.
Here’s how YOU can help
This weekend the BC Federation of Labour is undertaking public awareness leafleting to encourage the government to sit down and talk with health care unions. The campaign is also endorsed by the BC Health Coalition. The BC Nurses’ Union is supporting this effort because nurses know that privatization will decrease the quality of care for patients and increase RNs workload when there are fewer and less experienced support workers in facilities. Seniors and representatives from various unions will be leafleting the public at several London Drugs locations.
Please help to educate the public about this critical health care issue. If you can’t come please call a friend or co-worker and ask them to participate instead. Call us today to sign up for just two hours.
Call 604 868-4261. This will help us to ensure that there are enough volunteers at each location. Leaflets and other materials will be available at the stores. Do come prepared for the weather!
