Nurses welcome at Bill 29 Charter Challenge in Supreme Court

Proceedings are about to start in the BC Supreme Court on the Bill 29 Charter challenge. BCNU, HEU, and BCGEU launched this Charter of Rights suit against the BC government last year. The Unions allege that the Liberal government’s contract-breaking legislation, Bill 29, violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and is unconstitutional.

The proceedings are open to the public and BCNU members are encouraged to attend to demonstrate their concern regarding Bill 29.

Court dates are:
April 14 - 17, 2003
April 22 - 25, 2003

A typical day in Supreme Court runs from 10 am to 12 noon, then from 2 pm to 4pm.

The BC Supreme Court is located at 800 Smithe Street in Vancouver (enter on south side of Smithe). The court room number will be listed on a board inside the lobby. Look for "The Health Services and Support - Facilities Sub-Sector et al and Her Majesty the Queen in Right of the Province of British Columbia."

BCNU members who attend will be reimbursed for mileage (45 cents per km) or public transportation fares, parking and meals as per BCNU expense policy (maximum $12 for lunch). Please call Carol Wallace (local 195 at the BCNU office - 604 433 2268) and request an expense form, which will be mailed to you. In order to be reimbursed, you must keep receipts to submit with your expense claim.
