SARS information on BCNU web site

The BCNU website now has both information on Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and links to other relevant sites. Visit www.bcnu.org for full details. SARS information is updated regularly and will be posted as it is received.

Basic information for nurses
With best practice infection control techniques, SARS has not spread to health care workers in BC.

Every facility must have an exposure control program that details protocols for:
  • Screening
  • Airborne and contact infection control
  • Cleaning
  • Patient transportation
  • Isolation
  • Education and training
Best practices includes the use of gloves, gowns, masks (N95 or equivalent) and eye protection through the use of goggles or face shields.

Current protocols state that masks can be used up to 12 hours as long as they do not become bent, wet, soiled or clogged.

There is no agreed upon protocols for storage of masks when not in use during a shift. Industrial hygiene practice is to store masks between use in a sealed plastic bag. BCNU has requested confirmation of this recommendation or more acceptable guidelines.

If ribavirin is used, it must be administered by trained staff only.
