BCNU endorses Patt Shuttleworth for CFNU president
BCNU Council members have endorsed Patt Shuttleworth for president of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions. BCNU’s executive committee is asking stewards to contact colleagues in other provinces to support her campaign.
Patt Shuttleworth, BCNU’s vice president, is running to become president of the 122,000-member Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions.
In March, BCNU Council voted to support her candidacy and contribute up to $5,000 for campaign expenses. BCNU’s executive committee is encouraging members to contact friends and colleagues in other provinces to support Patt’s campaign if they are attending the CFNU Convention, which will be held in early June.
"I have a vision for the future of the CFNU," says Shuttleworth. "I want it to be a more vital, action-orientated organization, one that links all Canadian nurses, including minority groups and youth."
During her two terms as BCNU vice president, Shuttleworth served as our union’s key spokesperson on the Romanow Report, and was responsible for planning, organizing and implementing the lobby that followed the report’s release. She has also worked closely with the BC Federation of Labour and RNABC. And she served as an officer of CFNU’s executive board for the past three years.
Shuttleworth says she will use her experience as BCNU’s lobby coordinator to help expand CFNU’s lobbying efforts. "Health care is a national issue, so it’s imperative that nurses have a strong national voice. We need CFNU members working in their own communities, talking with their friends and neighbours and lobbying federal, provincial and civic politicians about national and local issues. Our combined voices can make a difference."
(Correction: Please note that in the current edition of Update magazine, Patt Shuttleworth was incorrectly listed as BCNU’s PJAC chair. In fact, BCNU treasurer Maxine Armstrong is our PJAC chair.)
