Nurses should bring a steward to management meetings about legal cases involving patient care
If your employer asks you to attend a meeting with management or their lawyers about a legal case involving patient care, BCNU strongly advises you to bring a steward to the meeting.
Article 50 of BCNU’s Provincial Collective Agreement states: "The Employer shall insure to:
(A) exempt and save harmless employees from any liability action arising from the proper performance of her duties for the Employer, and
(B) assume all costs, legal fees and other expenses arising from any such action."

In this case, "exempt and save harmless" means your employer is legally responsible to represent nurses involved in malpractice, legal suits, etc.
It’s important, however, that you contact a steward before any such meeting with management or legal staff, so that BCNU can provide advice and support to assist you throughout the process.
