Purchasing past service or leaves of absence to increase Municipal or Public Service Pension
Deadlines apply

Members of the Municipal or Public Service Pension plans have the option of purchasing pensionable time from certain periods in their work history when contributions were not being made. Examples of eligible time include non-contributory time such as probation periods, periods of casual or part time employment, approved leaves of absence and arrears and reinstatements.

As of April 1, 2002, the Municipal and Public Service Pension Plans instituted deadlines for all purchases of pensionable service.

For all purchasable periods prior to April 1, 2002, you have until March 31, 2007 to complete the purchase request. After April 1, 2002, you have 5 years from the end date of the period to request the purchase. You must apply for the purchase while you are an active member of the plan for which the request is made.

You can find detailed information on the Plans’ website – www.pensionsbc.ca, http://www.pensionsbc.ca/puclic then click on Municipal or Public Service Pension Plan. Included is information on how to calculate the cost of purchasing extra pensionable time. Look under "Publications" for various "Pensionfacts".

Your employer also should be able to provide you with copies and other information.
