Extended health benefit available for those who must travel for medical care
Medical Referral Transportation benefit explained
The Medical Referral Transportation benefit is available for employees covered by the Provincial Collective Agreement and their dependents who cannot get required medical treatment in their community.
Benefit applies only when your physician makes the referral
If your physician refers you (or your dependent) for medical treatment by a physician that is not available in your community, you can submit expenses to Pacific Blue Cross for reimbursement. This applies only for travel to another medical centre outside of a 100 kilometre radius of your own community. Travel must be completed within 2 months of the date of physician referral.
Eligible expenses
Eligible expenses include transportation by public air, rail or bus service for an employee or dependent (and, if certified necessary by the attending physician, for an attendant) to and from the nearest locale equipped to provide the required treatment.
- Reimbursement for transportation will be based on the least expensive available fare.
- Where transportation by car is a reasonable alternative to public transport, mileage will be paid at 30 cents per kilometre but limited to the amount that would have been paid for the least expensive form of public transportation.
- Parking is not reimbursed.Bus or taxi service to and from the airport to the locale for medical treatment will be allowed.
- When required, the cost of accommodation and meals in a commercial facility will be provided up to a maximum of $70 per day for 3 days.

Submit all receipts and the written referral from the attending physician who verified the need for the referral to Pacific Blue Cross. Reimbursement will be based on 80% of the eligible expenses (after the $25 Extended Health deductible has been satisfied for the calendar year).
