Job action protocols for BCNU members
In acute care facilities with more than 75 members:*
If a picket line is up - report to a BCNU steward
If a picket line is up at your worksite, you must report to a BCNU steward to determine if you are designated for an essential service shift. You must sign in and you will receive an essential service badge if you are to go in to work.
If you are not designated for an essential service shift, please note that as per BCNU policy 3.1(3) "In order to access essential service work or defence funds, the member must contribute to job action activities as assigned by the Worksite Job Action Committee."
Job action activities include walking on the picket line, helping with scheduling, picking up supplies etc. Note that you will be expected to put in a full shift of job action activities. This is especially important because if the picket line comes down you will be expected to immediately report to work. Hourly job action rate of pay is $22.75 per hour.
Working together
Ensuring that essential services plans run smoothly takes a great deal of effort and our stewards are working very hard to achieve this. It is very important to report to work as normal and carry out the work assigned to you so we can all share in this fight for quality health care.
* At facilities where essential service levels are at 100 per cent and the employer is doing the staffing, you will be able to proceed in to work as scheduled. You can show your support for the Hospital Employees Union (HEU) and other health care support workers by joining picket lines in off-duty hours.
