PJAC Bulletin #5
Please disseminate as per job action protocol

One size does not fit all
Because all of our activities are in response to job action taken by other health care unions, it is not always easy to respond in a standard way for all work sites. PJAC recognizes that there are certain work sites (such as health units located at small acute care hospitals) that have special circumstances. If in doubt, contact a member of your Regional Executive or PJAC for clarification. PJAC can be reached at 604 433 2268 or 1 800 663 9991 local 2165.

Here is the defence fund payment policy
Defence fund claims may be made by BCNU members only if all of the following conditions have been met: A member has, in the 7 day week:
  • lost normal wages- earned less than $819 for assigned essential service shifts

fulfilled the minimum number of job action hours required of each member per week as directed by the Worksite Job Action Committee (WJAC).
The hourly job action rate of pay is $22.75 per hour for all BCNU members under the Provincial Collective Agreement.

On-call language still in effect
If you are taking part in job action related activities (walking a picket line etc) and you have been designated as on-call to go into work if needed, you are entitled to receive the on-call premium and if called back to work, the appropriate pay as outlined in Article 29 of the Provincial Collective Agreement. If you do not receive this rate of pay, please contact a BCNU steward.

Job action related activities at a work site other than your own
It is important that you sign in at your usual place of work in order to access defence fund payments. If your work site stewards agree that you should join another picket line, you must return to your home work site at the end of your shift to sign out.

Do not do other health care union members’ work
BCNU members should not perform any work that is normally carried out by other health care workers. If you are encountering problems with this, contact a BCNU steward or PJAC.

Support our strategic workers (BCNU stewards)
It is often very difficult to carry out essential service scheduling in the early stages of job action. It is strategic workers’ intent to schedule equitably so please be patient and if you’re good at scheduling, offer your assistance. Congratulations are in order for all strategic workers, who put in long hours under challenging circumstances.
