Celebrate National Nursing Week May 9 to 15, 2005 - Nursing Patients First. Safety always

This year’s National Nursing Week theme is “Nursing Patients First. Safety always.” National Nursing Week is an opportunity for nurses across BC to profile nursing accomplishments by educating the public around health issues and to promote the role of the nurse.

To launch Nursing Week, BCNU and the Services Employees International Union (SEIU) will be holding a joint news conference on Monday, May 9 to advocate for legislation that ensures safety engineered devices are provided in all health care settings across BC.

Radio ads will be aired in locations across the province - valuing nurses’ hard work and getting the BC Nurses’ Agenda message out!

Throughout BC, nurses are also organizing events for Nursing Week. If you want to get involved with an event in your area, you can call your BCNU Regional Chairperson to find out what is going on. You can get their number on the back of the Update.

Here is a sample of what BCNU members will be doing:

ER Nurses across BC come together in Kelowna May 13 to 15 for National Conference.
The National Emergency Nurses Association (NENA) conference will be held May 13 to 15 in Kelowna. BCNU will be organizing an exhibition table. There will be raffles everyday and a surprise gift from BCNU as well!

In Nelson, BCNU and local RNABC activists will lobby city council to proclaim May 9 to 15 National Nursing Week. There will be a banner over Baker Street celebrating Nursing week. A blood pressure clinic and leafleting will be held on Baker Street Saturday, May 14 from 1 to 4 pm.

Okanagan nurses organize OH&S campaign during Nursing week. BCNU stewards will be educating members on their rights regarding return to work, duty to accommodate, LTD and WCB. At bigger facilities, information tables will be set up for 2-3 days during the week and stewards will be giving away prizes. At smaller sites, stewards will be providing members with packages of information.

In Victoria, coffee and cake will be served at VGH for nurses on Monday, May 9 and in Kitimat and Terrace nurses will also be appreciated with cake and tea and an appreciation banner!

In Vancouver, BCNU stewards at VGH are planning to set up an information booth on Tuesday, May 10 with a draw for prizes. UBC site plans the same sort of activity. A monthly walk-about will be held Sunday, May 15, an optimum time to remind our members about voting.

At Children and Women’s Hospital, BCNU will participate in a poster presentation focused on health and safety issues under the NAOSH theme “Inform, Educate, Empower.”

At Richmond Hospital, BCNU stewards will be doing a walkabout on Saturday, May 14.

At Royal Columbian and Burnaby General Hospital, BCNU will feature display tables with relevant information, offer door prizes and will be do the same at other facilities throughout the Simon Fraser region.
