Independent bargaining – new agreements reached
BCNU has recently concluded bargaining for two independent collective agreements:
Grand Street Lodge
Members at Grand Street Lodge in Mission in will vote March 29 on a tentative agreement which was reached March 13. The proposed new collective agreement is for a four year term effective October 1, 2006 - March 31, 2010. RN's will see a 14.2 per cent wage increase over the life of the agreement retroactive to October 1, 2006. Other improvements are:
- Weekend shift premium increased from $.75/hr to $1.50/hr, effective date of ratification.
- Increase to vacation entitlement to add one day per year after four years of continuous service to a maximum of 38 days at year 22, effective July 1, 2007.
- Increase to maximum monthly earnings for Long Term Disability from $2500.00 to $3000.00.
- Cash in of 40 per cent of sick leave credits upon leaving the workforce after 10 years of service and on or after age 55, effective January 1, 2008.
- Casual employees now entitled to benefit enrolment with a benefit premium refund based on hours worked.
- A removal of the three year cap for casual employees' wage entitlement enabling casual employees to move to the next increment on the wage schedule based on hours worked.
Casual employees will now serve a probationary period of 300 hours of work or three months, whichever is greater.
All changes are effective on the date of ratification unless otherwise specified.
Bear Creek Lodge
After months of protracted talks, members of BCNU and HEU at Bear Creek Lodge in Surrey ratified their new collective agreement on March 5 by a margin of 100 per cent. Highlights include wage increases for RNs of 4.8 per cent, 3 per cent, and 3 per cent, for at total increase of 10.8 per cent over the three year term expiring September 30, 2009. HEU members in various job categories received increases averaging about 8 per cent over the same period. The bargaining teams were also able to negotiate improvements to vacation, shift premiums, vision care, education leave, and compassionate leave.
