Management agrees to display violence prevention signs in health facilities across the province
Clear language declares that violence will not be tolerated
BC's senior health care officials have agreed to display signs in health care facilities across the province warning against acts of violence.
The standard language on the signs declares:
"Violence, foul language and abusive behaviours are not acceptable. Verbal threats or acts of violence will not be tolerated and may result in removal from this facility and/or prosecution."
The language was agreed to this week at meetings of the Joint Nursing Policy Management Committee.
The signs – with black lettering on red background – will be posted in all health care facilities. Issues involving the unique circumstances in long term care facilities will be discussed by regional violence prevention committees.
The signs are a first step in a drive to create public awareness about the growing problem of violence against health care workers.
They're part of a commitment to violence prevention measures agreed to by health employers in the last round of bargaining with the Nurses' Bargaining Association. The BC Nurses' Union is the largest member of the NBA and pushed hard for the measures.
