Attention BCNU shoppers: Boycott Sears Canada
Convention delegates support locked out Sears service technicians
Delegates at BCNU's Convention 2008 voted unanimously in favour of a resolution that calls for a boycott of Sears Canada.
The resolution passed on February 27, 2008, after delegates heard a passionate speech from International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers local 213 rep Tony vanBetuw. He asked delegates to shop elsewhere until Sears Canada returns to the bargaining table and ends its lock out of more than 70 service technicians who repair Sears-bought appliances for customers in southern BC.
Sears Canada locked their technicians out on October 1, 2007, after local 213 members refused to accept a series of substantial concessions, including no guaranteed wage increase for four years, the right to impose split weekends, the loss of Boxing Day as a paid holiday and no overtime for the first half hour past quitting time.
The boycott is growing into a nationwide movement. IBEW leaders hope that the expansion of the boycott can put enough pressure on the retailer to return to the bargaining table.
The BCNU resolution states: "That BCNU support the locked out IBEW local 213 workers by sending information out to our members and encouraging them to take action by boycotting Sears stores with the goal of convincing them (Sears) to return to the bargaining table and negotiate in good faith."
