BCNU wants to hear from members negatively affected by Bill 29
Members who lost wages or benefits due to Bill 29 should contact BCNU before May 31, 2008
The BC government passed Bill 29 in January 2002. The controversial legislation affected facilities covered by the Health and Social Services Delivery Improvement Act. This includes facilities covered by the Provincial Collective Agreement in 2002. The bill removed important protections from our PCA and was used by the BC Liberals to contract out nursing jobs, particularly in long term care, as well as closing some worksites. In June 2007, the Supreme Court of Canada determined that certain sections of Bill 29 were unconstitutional and directed the BC government to negotiate with the unions.
BCNU recently negotiated a successful resolution to the Bill 29 dispute. Included in the agreement with the prov
incial government and employers is a $200,000 fund to partially compensate members who had been directly affected by the BC government's introduction of Bill 29.
If you believe you suffered lost wages and benefits because of Bill 29, please contact Jacquie Bobenic at the BCNU office. She will send you a questionnaire which you must complete and return to her before May 31, 2008. You can reach Jacquie Bobenic at 604-433-2268; or 1-800-663-9991; or jbobenic@bcnu.org.
If you have already contacted BCNU about this matter, there is no need to call us again. However, if you know of any former colleagues (even if they are no longer BCNU members) who may have been affected by Bill 29, please get them to contact BCNU, or send us their name and contact information.
