Take action to keep nurses screening every Canadian blood donor
Canadian Blood Services is proposing changes that will eliminate nurses from initial blood donor screening and replace them with ‘multi-skilled workers' with only eight weeks training.
CBS has asked Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq to allow a pilot project on the new scheme. But they've supplied no evidence to show the change will promote safe blood and healthy donors.
Nurses' unions across Canada have written to the minister of health asking her to reject the CBS's request, and the media has taken notice.
Canada's nurses' unions have broadened our efforts to protect Canada's blood supply by asking Canadians to contact Minister Aglukkaq.
- This week the Canadian Federation of Nurses' Unions launched its new website SafeBlood.ca. It has an easy to use Take Action tool.
- To promote SafeBlood.ca, a full-page advertisement was published in the January 18, 2010 edition of Ottawa's The Hill Times newspaper.
There are three quick online actions you can take to join other nurses in the Safe Blood campaign:
- send a message to Minister Aglukkaq today
- post a comment on the SafeBlood.ca blog. Leave your comment under your first name or use a screen name but you must use an actual email address (email address will not be published)
- put a link to www.SafeBlood.ca on your Facebook page. Ask your friends to visit the link and send an email to the federal health minister.
