BCNU supports Compass workers on strike in Fraser Health
Members encouraged to bring their own meals to work and to find places to eat other than Compass-run locations
BCNU stands behind striking Compass food-service workers by appealing to nurses and staff in the Fraser Health Authority to not purchase products from Compass cafeterias and coffee shops until a fair settlement has been reached.
The union encourages members to bring their own meals to work and to find alternate locations to eat during the strike.
The striking workers, members of the United Steelworkers, were locked out on October 17, 2009. In December 2009 the workers were sent a letter from Compass stating that the lockout had been lifted and the workers could come back to work for the same pay and benefits that they were receiving when they were locked out. The workers then went on strike.
The members are fighting for parity with what Compass pays their other workers doing the same job in other health authorities.
The USW considers that is has established "invisible picket lines" at the threshold of the Compass-run food-service areas, since they are prohibited from picketing inside hospitals.
