Glenwarren nurses ratify new contract
Deal keeps pace with wages under the Provincial Collective Agreement and retains a rare job security protection
Nurses at Glenwarren Lodge in Victoria have ratified a new collective agreement with a
100 percent "yes" vote.
The three-year contract maintains parity with the provincial collective agreement, with wage increases of three percent April 1, 2010 and three percent April 1, 2011. In addition there is a wage reopener April 1, 2012.
Most significant, the agreement extends a rare job security provision another three years. The provision stipulates that the employer cannot lay off RNs as a result of an increased utilization of LPNs. This is one of the very few BCNU agreements containing such a clause. Members took a strong stand to maintain it. They're extremely pleased with their success, after the employer began bargaining by seeking the removal of the clause in order to reduce costs.
The agreement also includes an increase in night shift premium from $3.00 to $3.25 and an increase in vision care from $225 to $250. BCNU agreed to two employer issues which are not major concerns in this small workplace – a reduction in the vacancy posting period from 14 days to 7, and a reduction in the maximum special leave bank from 25 days to 20, which matches the provision in the PCA.
