BCNU and HEABC establish Nurses' Retraining Fund
New fund to help displaced registered nurses/psychiatric nurses (RNs/RPNs) retrain for other areas of nursing

The BC Nurses' Union and the Health Employers Association of BC have established a new educational fund to help displaced nurses train for new opportunities in other areas of nursing.

The Nurses' Retraining Fund will provide educational support and assistance to nurses impacted by displacements, with the goal of minimizing job loss and workplace disruption.

Education funding is available to RNs/RPNs who are current members of the BCNU provincial collective agreement. Funding may include tuition or course fees, application/student fees and wage replacement.

Nurses are eligible for retraining funds under the following conditions:

  • The RN/RPN must have received a displacement notice after September 1, 2010, or;
  • by retraining and moving to another area of nursing, an RN/RPN mitigates the displacement of a nurse who did receive notice after September 1, 2010
  • RNs/RPNs can apply for education funds until April 1, 2011. Funding beyond that date will be determined by the BCNU/HEABC Joint Steering Committee

The following courses will be considered for funding from the retraining fund:

  • critical care or other specialty training
  • skills upgrading to work in acute care, or any other nursing-related education that prevents a nurse from displacement/unemployment

To apply for funding, download the application and send the completed forms to the HEABC contact as indicated on page 3 of the form.

For further information contact your BCNU regional chairperson or download the program guidelines.
