Nurses’ president to address WorkSafe BC hearings today

Nurses’ Union President addresses
sharps hearings today (November 23, 2006)

3:00 p.m. Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre Hotel
1088 Burrard Street, Vancouver

Debra McPherson, president of the BC Nurses’ Union, will call for quicker implementation of new rules that will require all BC health employers to use the safest sharp devices available.

She’ll be speaking today at 3 pm at hearings into proposed new WorkSafe BC rules governing the use of sharps devices, such as needles and scalpels. The hearings will be held at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre 1088 Burrard Street.

The proposed new rules will require health authorities to use the safest devices available for all medical procedures. While McPherson welcomes the new protections, they won’t come into effect until January and October 2008, leaving thousands of health care workers at unnecessary risk until then. She will also discuss other concerns.
