S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and the BC Nurses' Union thank everyone who helped bring an ailing Saanich woman back to Canada from Vietnam
The husband and children of Chinh Ngo are grateful she is home and the family is reunited

S.U.C.C.E.S.S and the BC Nurses' Union wish to thank everyone who contributed to the effort to bring Saanich resident Chinh Ngo back to Canada.

Ms. Ngo flew back to Victoria Nov. 20 accompanied by her husband Johnny Huynh on a flight from Vietnam to Victoria (via Hong Kong and Vancouver). Also on the flight was a medical team and essential medical equipment.

Ms. Ngo, who has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease), is now in Royal Jubilee Hospital. She was stricken with the debilitating nerve condition in August 2006, and was forced into a Vietnamese hospital on a respirator in April, after arriving for a visit to say farewell to her extended family.

Johnny Huynh was determined to bring her back to Canada so she can spend her last days with her husband and three sons. A large fund-raising campaign was necessary to cover the $57,000 cost of the medical evacuation.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and BCNU held a news conference in Vancouver last month with the Lac Viet Public Education Society. Resulting news stories helped put the fund-raising campaign over the top. The effort followed media stories and fund-raising events in Victoria.

The campaign was initiated by Terry Edwards, principal of the children's school, Northridge Elementary in Saanich.

Help also came from various businesses, including Cathay Pacific Airlines, and governmental organizations both federal and provincial.
