BC Nurses' no cuts to care campaign kicks off
with radio ads around BC
The BC Nurses' Union is launching a campaign to push for improved public healthcare services in an effort to stop expected cuts and closures. Debra McPherson, President of the BC Nurses' Union, is asking her members and the general public to contact their MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) and call for increased public services, especially during tough times when they are needed more than ever.
The recent announcement by the new Health Minister, Kevin Falcon, that Health Authorities would simply have to "do more with less" in order to cover off the
$360 million dollar shortfall in this year's budget has nurses extremely concerned that cuts to care are imminent.
From now until the next session of the legislature beginning at the end of August nurses will be running radio ads and undertaking outreach through print ads and letter-writing.
"If the provincial government holds firm on its current position, which is to not provide the Health Authorities with the resources that they need just to keep the services we have now, important services and programs will go. We want the new MLA's to hear from British Columbians that they want public healthcare protected," said McPherson.
The radio ad begins this week in the Lower Mainland, the North, the Kootenays and Vancouver Island and move to the Interior of British Columbia next week.
