BCNU is committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all members.

Our membership is diverse and dynamic – reflecting the changing face of the healthcare workforce. Through our Human Rights and Equity Committee and our equity caucuses and networks we work to ensure this diversity is reflected and equity is promoted at all levels of the union – in our activities and in our leadership and staff.

Equity Caucuses and networks

Our equity caucuses are the Workers of Colour Caucus, Aboriginal Leadership Circle, Workers with Disabilities Caucus, and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered Caucus.

These groups promote the profile and voice of BCNU members from communities that have endured historic and systemic discrimination and marginalization.

An additional caucus, the Men in Nursing Caucus, was established as a way of recognizing the challenges which men may face as they enter a profession that has been shaped and circumscribed historically by patriarchal gender norms.

In addition the Committee provides support to, and advocates on behalf of internationally educated nurses.

How to help

All members can contribute to efforts to build a more inclusive union, whether through participating in a caucus/network, or by working as an ally in support of the caucuses’ work.
