Security Coming to Forensics Psychiatric Hospital - A Good First Step

September 21, 2018
Forensics Psychiatric Hospital (FPH) in Coquitlam will implement the following changes:
  • Two security officers will be dedicated 24/7 to the hospital's four high-security units.
  • New teams of specialized clinical-security liaisons, who will also be stationed in those same high security units to provide education and care planning for high risk patients.
  • Training will be conducted regularly for all clinical staff to better prepare them for emergency situations.
  • Supervision and leadership will be provided by clinical nurse leaders. An evening and weekend nurse shift manager will be created to increase support to direct care providers.
  • Additional nursing staff will be hired to provide better care for patients.

Since January of this year, 10 BCNU members have been assaulted at the psychiatric hospital in addition to several other staff on the site.

This initiative has been developed with the support of the BC government and will be reviewed jointly with PHSA on an ongoing basis. BCNU supports collaborative, solutions-based approaches such as these, designed to address the risk of violence in the workplace, protect all health-care workers and allow for the provision of safe patient care.

A joint press release was issued to media announcing BCNU's most recent member safety initiative at FPH on September 19, 2018.
