BCNU Governance Review
As a democratic, member-led union, strong governance helps BCNU represent members effectively, make transparent and accountable decisions, and use member resources responsibly.
The 2026 governance review examines how well the union's governance structures and decision-making processes serve members today and how they can be strengthened for the future. Led by Watson Board Advisors, an independent governance advisory firm, the review identifies strengths, challenges and opportunities to improve governance.
The review was temporarily paused as the Nurses’ Bargaining Association (NBA) job action escalated throughout the late spring and early summer. Consultation has now resumed, beginning with the reopening of a member survey from Nov. 9 – 20 and continues throughout November and December through interviews, focus groups and individual conversations with Watson Board Advisors.
Purpose of the Governance Review
The review assesses how BCNU's structures, roles and decision-making processes support effective representation, accountability and responsible use of member resources.
It aims to identify what works well, clarify roles and responsibilities, and explore opportunities to strengthen governance and support the union's long-term effectiveness.
Guiding Principles
Grounded in BCNU's mission, vision and values, the governance review is guided by:
- Member voice and representation
- Democratic accountability and transparency
- Respectful and inclusive engagement
- Integrity and responsible stewardship
- Clear and effective decision-making
- Long-term sustainability and continuous improvement
These principles guide consultation and the development of potential options for improvement.
Scope of the Governance Review
The review examines governance roles, structures and relationships across BCNU, including Council, the Provincial Executive Committee, committees, caucuses and networks.
It also considers decision-making and accountability processes, feedback from members, elected leaders and staff, and governance practices at other unions and membership organizations.
The review focuses on organizational structures and processes rather than individual performance or personal conflicts. It does not guarantee changes or immediately resolve existing challenges.
Expected Outcomes
The review will provide a clearer understanding of BCNU's governance strengths, challenges and priorities, along with evidence-based findings and options for improvement.
Any proposed governance changes will follow BCNU's democratic processes, including consideration and approval at convention where required.
