Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee Essentials

Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees (JOHSC) are the cornerstone of effective Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) programs. They facilitate members’ rights to participate collaboratively with the employer in eliminating and reducing the risk of occupational injury and disease. JOHSC are legally mandated by the Workers Compensation Act and are a provision of our collective agreements.

This course utilizes hands-on activities and a practical training approach to learning through action. It is best suited for those who learn through doing and need to engage in the role quickly. Topics covered include OHS law and worker rights, JOHSC representative role and responsibilities, inspections, investigations, and committee procedures

The purpose of JOHSC education is to create consistent practice for representative work, support building collaborative committees that work effectively to improve occupational health and safety outcomes in the workplace.

Course Format:

This course includes.

• A live session – in-person session designed for interactive learning.
• Printed resource package – practical tools and reference materials to help participants implement what they’ve learned and share knowledge with their coworkers.

Note: There are no pre-course preparation requirements. All materials are provided as references for use during and after the live session.

Course Requirements:

Be a worksite JOHSC representative. This course is open to BCNU membership; however, preference will be given to JOHSC representatives.

Note: Course applications open four months prior to course start, and close six weeks prior to course start to allow members time to request union leave.

Salary Reimbursement:
