President’s Closing Remarks: Gear Calls on Delegates to Remain United

Convention 2025 - Day 3 - Closing Remarks

In a powerful closing address, BCNU President Adriane Gear reflected on a convention week filled with inspiration, solidarity, and renewed determination. She thanked delegates for the energy and engagement they brought to this year’s gathering, noting how it marked a turning point in the union’s fight for safer and more inclusive workplaces, set the stage for a strong round of provincial bargaining and signalled a better future for nurses across BC.

Gear thanked Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions President Linda Silas and Catherine Kennedy, President of National Nurses United for sharing stories of courage, struggle, and action. She said their presentations reminded delegates that they are not alone in their fight for improved working conditions for nurses.

Gear also lauded delegates for the energy and enthusiasm they displayed during a powerful lunch-hour rally that saw over 500 BCNU members march through downtown Vancouver to denounce the epidemic of violence in health-care settings. The demonstration sent a clear message to employers and the government that nurses deserve to feel safe at work. Union members from the BC General Employees’ Union and the Health Sciences Association of BC joined the rally in solidarity, showcasing health-care workers’ collective strength and underscoring the urgent need for meaningful change.

Adriane also highlighted the key discussions held throughout convention, from the implementation of minimum nurse-to-patient ratios to workplace safety, commitments to truth and reconciliation, and ongoing efforts to build grassroots unity. She reminded delegates to carry the momentum built this week back to their home regions.

“I urge you to share what you’ve learned over the past three days with your colleagues and co-workers,” she said. “We need the support and unity of every BCNU member if we are going to be successful in bargaining – and I know we will be successful.”

In closing, Gear encouraged nurses to leave with their heads held high, their voices loud, and their solidarity strong.

“Thank you again for an incredible convention,” she said. “Let’s bring this energy and inspiration back to our communities and into the future we’re building together.”
