Provincial Treasurer’s Report: BCNU Ready as NBA Bargaining Reaches Critical Stage

Convention 2026: Day 1 - Sharon Feature

BCNU provincial treasurer Sharon Sponton assured delegates that the union is in a financially strong position and ready for the challenges ahead.

Sponton reported that membership growth – alongside roughly 2,000 new full-time equivalent nursing positions and wage increases – has strengthened BCNU’s financial stability.

Sponton emphasized that BCNU’s finances are robust, with contingency plans in place should additional resources be needed. She also recognized the immense work of BCNU’s finance department staff, who continue to meet increasing demands associated with a growing membership.

In addition to the financial update, this year's treasurer’s report focused on BCNU’s extensive preparation for potential job action. Sponton chairs the Nurses’ Bargaining Association Provincial Job Action Committee. She introduced delegates to the other members of the committee and noted that job action planning has been underway for nearly a year.

“I assure you that we are very prepared,” she said. “Our working group consists of provincial executives, regional council members and staff, including directors and managers from labour relations, communications, IT, special projects and member engagement teams.”

Sponton reported that the group’s expertise has allowed the union to strategically plan job action from an operations perspective over the past several months.

“You’re in good hands and we’ve got this,” she told delegates.

Sponton urged the union’s activists and members to complete job action modules, attend town halls, stay informed and actively engage in the process. She framed the moment as a critical opportunity not only to secure a strong collective agreement, but also to protect the future of nursing for generations to come.

“Our history has shown us that a picket line with health-care workers doesn’t last long,” she said. “You’re standing up for yourselves, your patients, your communities and your well-being. Let’s do this for us, and for those who come after us.”
