Members Debate Bylaw Amendments
Delegates engaged in vigorous debate on nine proposed bylaw amendments during the first two days of Convention 2026.
The group passed an amendment to bylaw Article 12.01, adding restorative justice language and affirming the union’s commitment to helping members resolve complaints. Delegates also passed an amendment to Article 8.05, including new language that adds stewards with a diversity, equity and inclusion focus to the list of eligible convention delegates.
A proposed amendment to Article 1 that would have disallowed any person in an excluded position with any health employer from attending union meetings, holding elected positions, or holding temporary or permanent BCNU staff positions, also passed.
An amendment correcting a spelling error in Article 5 was easily carried. Delegates voted in favour of five further amendments, including:
- A housekeeping amendment adding “Alternates” to the list of eligible convention delegates.
- Three amendments to Article 12 modernizing language related to communication in the complaint process, and changing language to increase the merit threshold to assess complaints; and
- An amendment to Articles 14 and 15 adding new language referring to emergency circumstances beyond the control of BCNU.
The day ended with initial discussions on proposed resolutions, which will continue on day three of Convention 2026.
