Biography

Sharon Sponton was elected BCNU provincial treasurer in a special election in December 2023. She previously served as the provincial treasurer from September 2016 to August 2023. She has been involved with the BCNU Finance Committee, Retiree Benefit Program Committee, Human Resources Committee, and Bursary Committee. She was the provincial returning officer overseeing elections and ratification votes and chair of the Provincial Job Action Committee from September 2016 until August 2023.

Sharon became a steward in 2004 after recognizing breaches of the collective agreement and was driven to ensure contract compliance. A strong supporter of social justice and equity issues, BCNU's work in this area attracted her to become more involved in union work. She served on the North West region's executive team as treasurer for two terms before moving into the regional council member position in January 2010.

Sharon has extensive experience as a direct care nurse. She graduated from University of the Fraser Valley in 1995. Since graduation, she has worked in acute care, palliative care, pediatrics, obstetrics, home care nursing and public health. She has worked in urban hospitals in BC's Lower Mainland as well as rural, remote sites in BC's north. Sharon values the experiences she has gained through her wide nursing background, and her commitment to nursing and to nurses is foundational to her steward, regional council and treasurer roles within the BCNU.

Sharon graduated from the University of British Columbia in 2013 with a Master of Business Administration in Healthcare degree and from Dalhousie University with a certificate in financial management in 2017.
