Compensation for Canada Day 2018

October 18, 2017
Reminder to all members that Canada Day will be observed Monday, July 2

BCNU would like remind all members preparing vacation requests for 2018 that the Canada Day statutory holiday will be observed Monday, July 2. The Federal Holidays Act provides that Canada Day is observed on July 1 of each year, unless it falls on a Sunday.

In 2018, Canada Day falls on a Sunday; therefore, it will be observed on Monday, July 2.

This means that only those members working on Monday, July 2 will be entitled to receive pay for working on a statutory holiday, as outlined in Article 39.03 of the NBA collective agreement.

In preparation for 2018 vacation planning, please note the following:

  • Sunday, July 1, 2018, will be treated as a regular workday.
  • Members who work on Sunday, July 1 will NOT be entitled to compensation for working a paid holiday.
  • Monday July 2, 2018, will be treated as a statutory holiday. All terms and conditions of the collective agreement with regard to paid holidays (found in Article 39) will apply to those members scheduled to work.
