BCNU Members Encouraged to Report Exposures to COVID-19 at Work

December 16, 2020
Over the course of the pandemic, a significant number of nurses have fallen ill following exposure to COVID-19 at work

BCNU is encouraging nurses who believe they have been exposed to COVID-19 while at work, either through issues with personal protective equipment (PPE), ineffective infection control practices or through some other means of transmission to report the exposure as a workplace incident, ensuring that it is both investigated appropriately and that it is reported to WorkSafeBC.

If you believe that you have been exposed to COVID-19 through the course of your employment, you should take the following actions:

  • If you start feeling respiratory symptoms, inform your employer immediately and take all appropriate actions
  • If you work for a Health Authority, contact the Workplace Health Call Centre at 1-866-922-9464
  • If you work for a non-Health Authority employer, please follow your local processes to report this incident. If you are unsure how to do this, please contact your local steward or regional executive
  • Contact your employer to determine if they would like you to take any additional health precautions
  • Contact 811 or your health provider if you need additional medical attention or medical advice
