BCNU marks North American Occupational Safety and Health Week

Every nurse deserves a safe and healthy work environment. Workplace safety starts with nurses speaking up, sharing experiences, and supporting one another to create a culture where safety is prioritized.

To support this goal, BCNU is inviting members to share the ways they promote their own safety at work on their social media channels and tag BCNU during  North American Occupational Safety and Health Week (NAOSH Week), May 5-10. BCNU will reshare select photos throughout the week and participants will be entered for a chance to win a set of Canadian-made scrubs and a BCNU water bottle. The deadline for submissions is May 9. Winners will be announced on May 22.

BCNU’s Your Voice, Your Safety initiative promotes individual actions and recognizes safety champions. An exclusive focus on nurses’ safety reinforces the union’s commitment to creating a healthier, safer, and more sustainable work environment for BC’s nurses.

How to participate:

  • Ask your regional health and safety or mental health representative to provide you with a Your Voice, Your Safety branded sign. You can also download the sign by visiting the BCNU OHS Outreach page.
  • Take a minute to write down an example of what you do to promote your own safety at work (examples include “I report hazards in my workplace,” or “I participate on my JOSH Committee to improve worker safety.
  • Ask a friend or co-worker to take a photo of you holding the Your Voice, Your Safety sign with your message.
  • Post the photo on your own social media channels and tag @BCNursesUnion (Facebook) and @TheBCNursesUnion (Instagram) using the hashtags #YourVoiceYourSafety and #NAOSHWeek2025.

Members who would prefer not to engage on social media can also participate by filling out a form and uploading a photo of themselves with the NAOSH sign here.

NAOSH Week started in Canada and spread to the US and Mexico in 1997 through an agreement between the three countries to raise awareness about occupational health and safety. Since then, the initiative has grown into a continent-wide effort to promote safety culture and encourage participation in workplace health and safety activities.
