BCNU Council Resumes External Governance Review
Members asked to give input through a survey from Nov. 9 - 20
BCNU Council is resuming its governance review with new opportunities for members, elected leaders and staff to share feedback on how the union is governed and the extent to which the union remains focused on advancing members’ interests.
The review was temporarily paused as the Nurses’ Bargaining Association (NBA) job action escalated throughout the late spring and early summer. Consultation will now resume, beginning with the reopening of a member survey from Nov. 9 – 20.
The review builds on a request brought forward at BCNU's 2024 convention to examine elements of the union's governance, along with subsequent governance work and council evaluation findings. Led by Watson Board Advisors, an independent governance advisory firm, the review identifies strengths, challenges and opportunities to strengthen representation, accountability and responsible use of member resources.
Building on member feedback
Many members who participated in the initial consultation provided valuable perspectives on BCNU's governance. That feedback remains part of the review and will help inform the next stages of consultation.
Previous respondents do not need to complete the survey again. However, those wishing to review, revise or add to their responses can contact Gabby Freer at Watson Board Advisors at gabby@watsoninc.ca for assistance. Survey responses remain confidential, accessible only to Watson.
As a democratic, member-led union, BCNU relies on members' experiences to help shape its direction. Whether members have been actively involved in union governance or have engaged with BCNU primarily through their workplaces, these perspectives are an important part of the process.
Have a say in BCNU's future
The member survey reopens Nov. 9 - 20. Those who have not yet participated are encouraged to complete the confidential survey and contribute to the review. A survey link will be shared in member eNews and on bcnu.org.
Further information will follow about additional opportunities to participate in consultation interviews or focus groups. BCNU encourages members to take part in consultation opportunities and contribute to a governance review that reflects the experiences, priorities and interests of the membership.
