Retiree Benefit Program Committee Warns Members of Potential Text Message Scam
Committee advises fraudulent activity may be connected to recent announcement of payments to some retirees, set for this year
The Retiree Benefit Program (RBP) Committee is warning members of a potential scam involving text messages targeting those enrolled in the RBP.
This activity appears connected to a recent communication from the RBP Committee to retired and active members regarding payments to some RBP members that are scheduled in 2026.
Members’ safety and privacy are very important to the RBP Committee. The committee will only contact RBP members by phone or by email. The committee has never used text messaging to contact RBP members and has never requested personal or financial information by text message.
How members can protect themselves if they receive a call, email, or text from the RBP Committee and are unsure whether it is legitimate:
- Contact the RBP Committee directly, via phone or email to ensure it is legitimate. Do not provide personal or financial information.
- Do not reply to a text message or click any link in a text message claiming to be sent by RBP.
- If contacted by phone and they feel uncertain, end the call and contact RBP by phone via the BCNU main switchboard at 604-433-2268 or 1-800-663-9991 to verify independently.
- If they receive a text message that claims to be from the RBP Committee, save a screenshot of the message and email it to rbp@bcnu.org.
- Email RBP directly at rbp@bcnu.org with questions or concerns.
- Visit bcnu.org/RBP for accurate information.
When in doubt, it is always best for members to pause and verify before taking any action.
Thank you for your attention and for helping protect yourselves and other members.
If members have received a suspicious message or would like confirmation about a communication, they should reach out to the RBP Committee using the email address or phone number noted above.
