Legalization of Cannabis Creates new Challenges for Health Care Professionals and Their Employers

October 30, 2018
The changes to the legal status of cannabis as of October 17, 2018 have created unique and unprecedented challenges for employers.

The BC Nurses' Union will be reviewing the legalities within any new workplace employer policies that could have a bearing on members.

Considerations include drug testing policies, health-plan and group benefits, impairment definitions, smoking policies, scent-free workplaces, exposure in home visits, and ability that staff provide safe patient treatment and care.

Activists who sit on their JOHS committees should inquire about the employer's policies and the training and supervision plans for ensuring compliance with policies.
