Nurses' Latest Wage Increase on the Way

April 03, 2017
NBA members receive further improvements to their overall compensation including new wage increases for all and LPN access to shift premiums

All members working under the 2014-2019 Nurses' Bargaining Association (NBA) provincial contract are due to receive a new wage increase effective the first pay period following April 1, 2017. Nurses will receive a 0.5% bump, which is part of the overall gain in wages giving nurses at least a 6.3% raise by the final year of this contract.* NBA members are encouraged to view the wage schedule to find out what their new wage will be.

As members may recall, this contract also achieved a raise to the weekend shift premium paid for each hour worked between 2300 hours Friday and 2300 hours Sunday, increasing to $2.30 per hour from $2.00 per hour. Effective April 1, 2017, LPNs are now eligible to receive this and all other NBA shift premiums listed in Article 28 of the 2014-2019 NBA provincial contract. Access to these shift premiums is a significant improvement for LPNs, particularly the $2.30 per hour weekend shift premium. Those previously covered by the FBA contract received a $1.00 per hour weekend shift premium; for those covered by the CBA contract, that shift premium had been just $0.25 per hour. This win for LPNs speaks to the mission and values of BCNU, which are to advance the economic well-being of its members and seek equality within the membership.

RN and RPN members covered under this agreement are entitled to receive a portion of the damages won from the employer for their failure to implement the safe staffing provisions from 2012. The deadline for members to complete the form is June 30, 2017.

Starting September 1, 2017, all LPN members will see a $1.00 per hour wage increase, or a 3.6% raise in their wages, bringing the total wage increase for LPNs to nearly 10% over the life of this agreement.**
