Delegates Debate Resolutions

Convention 2026: Day 3 - Resolutions Feature

Delegates engaged in lively and productive discussion on the third and final day of Convention 2026. The group debated nine important resolutions and voted in favour of a resolution that BCNU not invest internal funds directly in companies identified by the United Nations as actively profiting from Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine.

Delegates rejected seven resolutions that called on the union to:

  • Provide Add Pay and a $2.15 per hour regular premium to PEC positions, excluding the President, retroactive to April 1, 2023.
  • Send a letter to the MPP board of trustees to lobby to restrict new investments in companies whose primary business is expanding oil, gas and coal extraction or related fossil fuel infrastructure and adopt a comprehensive plan to responsibly phase out existing fossil fuel holdings.
  • Recognize anti-Palestinian racism as defined by the Arab Canadian Lawyers Association in 2022.
  • Approve expenses submitted by Dec. 31 in the year of the expense or 120 days from the date of the expense, whichever is longer.
  • Abolish term limits for full-time stewards and stewards at-large.
  • Increase the term length for full-time stewards and stewards at-large to five years.
  • Amend the eligibility criteria for the New and Young Nurses’ Network to include members who are 40 years of age or under or have five years or less nursing experience.

Delegates discussed and referred to Council a resolution calling on the union to reaffirm its support for the United Nations’ Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and lobby the province to honour its commitment to Indigenous Peoples by upholding, implementing and protecting the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act in its current form.

Prior to convention, BCNU Council voted to adopt two resolutions that had been previously submitted for convention debate:

  • That full-time stewards or Enhanced Disability Management Program reps may request another FTS or EDMP rep to attend any revocation of appointment or selection appeal meeting, where possible.
  • That BCNU advise members participating in union investigations into alleged bullying and harassment in writing of the available resources and support both inside and outside BCNU where reasonable at each stage of the investigation process. And that BCNU include a non-disclosure agreement provision that permits the members to confidentially discuss their personal experiences with their health-care providers as part of therapeutic treatment.
