This is a hybrid event. The in-person dinner begins at 6 p.m. and the online (Zoom) presentation and discussion begins at 7 p.m.
On Oct. 29, join the Men in Nursing Network at the BCNU head office in Burnaby for a community dinner and critical conversation on men’s mental health in the nursing profession.
Led by Dr. John Oliffe, the session will explore men’s health in Canada, with a focus on mental health challenges affecting men and boys. Topics will include:
- Men’s mental health and substance use
- Depression and distressed or disrupted relationships
- The impact of deficit-based representations of masculinity
- Masculinity, the manosphere and “looksmaxxing”
- Reframing help-seeking as health-seeking
- Caring masculinities and gender-responsive nursing practice
Meet the speaker
Dr. John Oliffe is a professor and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Men’s Health Promotion at UBC’s School of Nursing. He is the founder and lead investigator of UBC’s Men’s Health Research program, where his work focuses on masculinities and their influence on men’s health behaviours, illness management, mental health and suicide prevention.
All members and students are welcome to attend.
